What are the Xero Shoes XT Max barefoot shoes?
Xero Shoes are named for their zero heel elevation. All regular running shoes have built-up padded heels. The concept of minimalist shoes like the Xero Shoes are to eliminate all the padding and allow your feet to have better contact with the ground.
I've personally been wearing Xero Shoes for more than a decade (and love them!). The XT-Max is their most recent trainging shoe model.

I've found the shoes to be very comfortable and supportive for lateral movements...they fit very well.
They also have a bit more solidity around the outside of the toe box (which is a benefit if you think you might accidentally drop a weight on your foot).
Personally, I'm a big fan of the "minimalist" shoe concept...no big thick heel to separate your feet from the ground. This is very helpful for exercises where you're generating power through your feet and you don't want to lose power through thick, cushioned heels of a running shoe.
You can see from the white soles that these are designed for indoor use.

Instead of normal tie-up laces, they feature a "bolo" style lacing system. You push the button thing in, pull the loop tight, then slide the button thing down. Then just tuck the lace into the band on the shoe top and you're good to go.

Bottom line, the XT Max training shoes from Xero Shoes are excellent and, to me, at least, the ideal training shoe for gym workuouts.
