How long do you think it takes to form a new habit?
A Health Psychology researcher, Phillippa Lally, working for the University College London undertook a study to research habit forming. She found that it takes 66 days for a habit to become automatic - just over 2 months. So in that short space of time, you can get fitter and stick to it. Start with little goals and these will naturally get bigger as you achieve your aspirations. You will soon see your body changing and have a different outlook on life. Your new fitness habit will become a regular part of daily life.
Starting Small
It is natural when you are starting out on your fitness journey, to want to see big changes in a very short space of time. However, this is very difficult to maintain. Getting fit means changing your lifestyle. If you are trying to lose weight, eating fewer calories, and healthier food is the way to go. But your body will adjust better to this lifestyle change, a little bit at a time. It won’t feel like you’re missing out.
For instance, you could stop having sugar in tea. And the next week swap your mid-afternoon bag of chips for a couple of apples.
If you are trying to get fitter, don’t go out for a 5 mile run straight away, your body may not be able to cope. However, if you run small distances, three times a week - even alternating running and walking, you can build up your fitness levels over a period of 8 weeks easily.
Become hooked on your healthy habit
Be obsessed with your new fitness regime - it is worth doing some research and making it great fun. For instance, if you have taken up running, look into new shoes, different techniques and breathing better.
Get online, find a support group, join a running club and be obsessed. Becoming a new you means completely embracing your new healthy lifestyle. It will quickly become part of who you are.
Get friends and family involved
There are no better supporters in the world than your friends and family. Get them involved in your new fitness journey, tell them about your progress, your plans, and your aspirations. They can be your biggest cheerleaders. You never know, they may even choose to join in. Having support around you will encourage you to keep your new lifestyle habit up until it has become a firm part of your life.
It doesn’t take long to form the habit of fitness. With small changes and a little every week, you will soon find that you are healthier, feel good and look great.
