Resistance bands are an excellent and very versatile piece of training equipment, for home gym training, training while traveling or even for use at the gym.
Latex rubber is the most common material used for training bands, however they do have their disadvantages, the major one being that they're made of latex rubber, which some people are allergic to.
Vector Athletics has something new...training bands made from silicone.
Find out how they stack up to the standard latex bands and if they might be a better option for you and your training.
How are Silicone Bands different from latex rubber bands?
Well, this will sound obvious but it's that they're made of silicone rather than latex rubber!
It's HOW silicone PERFORMS as a material that makes it different than latex rubber in terms of band training.
I found the primary differences to be in how smooth the bands stretch and how far they stretch.
I found silicone bands didn't give as "abrupt" of a resistance curve as latex bands. The difference can be subtle but I found it to be noticeable on certain exercises, such as reverse band squats.
They're also more "grippy" than some of the latex bands I've used (though that does depend on the process used by the manufacturer).
This can come in handy for some exercises, such as band-assisted chin-ups where you don't want the band to slip off your foot. In this picture, you can see I've got my foot almost vertical and the band still stays on.
Silicone bands can be used for EVERY exercise you'd use latex bands for!
Here a couple of "hybrid" exercise I like to use bands for with free weights.
Band-Barbell Curls are great for increasing tension on the contraction at the top of the exercise.
And In-Set Supersets for Triceps (lying extensions to close grip bench press).
The bands give you constant tension on the triceps as you're doing the exercise (demo in video).
Bottom Line
Silicone bands are just as good, if not better, than latex bands. The material has some distinct advantages over latex (non-allergenic, smoother resistance, rounded edges, no smell) and can be a great addition to your home gym or to bring with you to the gym!
