Home workout equipment comes in a tremendous variety of forms, ranging from free weight equipment, to machines to bands (and much more).
The Hygear Gear 1 home gym system is based on band/tubing training with several key upgrades that separate it from a basic band setup.
I'll go over these plus several other excellent innovations that make the Hygear system stand out in the home gym equipment market.

What is the Hygear Gear 1?
At its most basic, the Gear 1 is an anchor point, bands/tubing and handles (or cuffs). Where the Gear 1 diverges from that is in "smartness" of the equipment.
In addition to the bands, the Gear 1 incorporates sensors that pair with your smart phone via Bluetooth. This gives you real-time tracking and feedback of all the training that you do with the system.
You can very easily adjust tension using the small red button on the edge of the plastic piece (you can see it by my left shoulder in the picture below). Just hold down the button and pull or push that thing up or down to shorten or lengthen the bands. This makes adjusting resistance VERY easy and fast (it's the best system I've seen for doing it, to be honest...standing closer or further to adjust how much a band is stretched can only do so much in terms of adjusting resistance).
Hygear has a workout app that connects with the sensors to track all your training and take you through a tremendous variety of workouts.
Access to these workouts and the tracking is a paid subscription but the price is very reasonable, considering what you get. The equipment itself can be used without the full features of the paid app (meaning you can still work out with it), but you won't get the full complement of workouts and tracking, which, in my opinion, is one of the major reasons for getting this system in the first place.
Who is the Hygear Gear 1 system for?
In my experience, this type of training equipment is going to be best for beginner to intermediate trainers, who are looking for some guidance in their workouts.
The workouts in the app walk you through the ENTIRE workout, from warm-ups, to workout to cooldown, all with video demonstrations and timing. It's PERFECT for those who need that extra help in their workouts.
Advanced trainers (especially those who are experienced in free weight training) won't be a good fit for this type of training.
How to Set Up The Hygear Gear 1
The Gear 1 comes with two methods of anchoring the bands...a strap and clip system and a door anchor point.
To use the strap, simply loop it around your solid object then clip it onto itself (the strap).
You want to loop it quite a few times around, if you're anchoring onto something small, like the chin-up bar I'm using. When you clip it back onto the strap, there shouldn't be much extra strap. They give you a big strap in case what you have to anchor on is also large.
You can also use a door anchor point. Just hang the nylon strap part of the top of the door so the black "block" part is on the other side, then close the door. The bands clip on to the two metal loops, just like the strap has.
And don't forget to use the included door handle warning sign!
The handles that come with the Gear 1 are very solid, making them easier to grip...they don't bend like lower-quality handles, which fold the hands up as you're trying to work out.
The system also comes with a pair of Velcro ankle/wrist cuffs.
What Exercises Can You Do With the Gear 1?
You can do any "anchor point" band exercises that you can do with any other set of bands! This gives you a wide range of exercises such as...
-
Chest press
-
Rows
-
Pushdowns
-
Curls
-
Squats
-
Deadlifts
All of the exercises in the Hygear workout app have video demos and instructions on how to perform them properly.
How Does The App Work?
I found the app very simple to use. It gives you a menu of workouts to choose from, covering a wide variety of goals and muscle groups.
It track every workout you do...time, calories burned, total reps, work done, etc. It's very motivating to see how much you've actually done and it gives you "trophies" when you achieve certain milestones (like consistent workout, total reps done...that kind of thing).
Here are some screenshots from the app.
Anything That Could Use Improvement?
In terms of equipment quality, the Gear 1 is built solid. The tubing/bands are definitely durable and the handles are nice and solid.
As with any training equipment, anything that's plastic is generally going to break down faster. The sliders that control and adjust the tension are fully plastic, so you'll want to be careful about not dropping them (primarily when you're doing exercises with a low anchor point).
You'll definitely want to be aware that to really maximize your experience with the Gear 1 system, you will need a monthly paid subscription ($9.99 per month at the time of this writing).
There are some workouts that require change in anchor point height. You'll need to pause the workout app in order to do this as it will take more than a few seconds to adjust height (for the strap, you'll need to unclip it then unwrap it then re-wrap it then clip it again). This process is simple but does take more than a few seconds...the door anchor is faster.
There is a bit of a learning curve with some of the exercises and warm-ups, but you always have the option to pause the video and make sure you know what you're doing.
Conclusion:
Overall, the Gear 1 from Hygear is a really nice piece of home gym equipment, targeted for beginner to intermediate trainers. It's portable and won't take up much space in your home or in your luggage (if you bring it with you while traveling).
It's well built and, once you get the hang of it, very easy to use. The reward and goal system integrated into the app will help keep you motived to stay consistent with your training (consistency is the single most important factor for success with exercise!).
It's not designed to develop maximum strength or build maximum muscle... there are better tools in the toolbox for that.
The Hygear Gear 1 is most effective for overall "getting in shape" or "staing in shape" type of training. It achieves that goal very effectively and is something that I can very highly recommend for you, if that's your aim with your workouts!
