Answer:
It's
not uncommon for knees to hurt with lunges.
Squats are a good alternative, though those
may give you trouble as well.

It may be
too similar to the lunges for you though.
Another good
one is the wall sit. Basically, you maintain
a sitting position with your back against
the wall and your knees bent and hold it
for as long as possible.
Dumbell
split squats are one of my favorite
thigh exercises as well.
For training
the glutes without any knee involvement,
one
legged glute deadlifts are perfect.
