Inner Lower Back Muscles

Question:

Are there muscles on the inner part of your lower back, around the #1, 2, & 3 lumbar vertebrae and if there are what exercises can be done to strengthen them?



Answer:

The muscles you describe are primary the Quadratus Lumborum (http://altmed.iatp.org.ua/pain/muscles/2_4.htm), though you'll also find the lower fibers of the Erector Spinae there.

Hyperextensions, reverse hyperextensions, deadlifts, and good mornings are good exercises to strengthen the area.
